It is debated how to measure unconscious perception. Recently, a new paradigm called “breaking continuous flash suppression” provided evidence that unconscious perception might be much more extensive than previously thought. However, this paradigm has not been critically evaluated yet and its assumptions have not been evaluated. Here, we will critically review this new paradigm and propose and test a novel version of it that will overcome several of the shortcomings of the original design. This novel version of the paradigm will equip future researchers with a sensitive and valid tool for studying unconscious perception.
