What is the scope of unconscious perception? This question is difficult to answer because different researchers use different measures for proving the absence of consciousness. Some use subjective measures that may underestimate consciousness, while others use objective measures that may overestimate consciousness. Here, we will use EEG multivariate decoding methods to track neural responses to invisible stimuli that are rendered either objectively or subjectively invisible. Results will reveal how the extent of unconscious processing depends on the measure researchers adopting. Ultimately, these findings will inform current theories on the neural correlates of consciousness.
